High Rolls Volunteer Fire Department (HRVFD) will be celebrating its 50th year in spring of 2010. The fire department was formed in 1959, but did not become recognized as a department until 1960 following the mandatory one-year waiting period. HRVFD will celebrate with an open house party - everyone is invited to come and celebrate with them! In honor of their fifty years of service to High Rolls, Mountain Park and the surrounding community, HRVFD hopes to attract at least seven new members to be operational at an ideal staffing level.

IMPROVEMENTS & NEW EQUIPMENT
Piney Woods Subdivision in the High Rolls fire protection district just completed the installation of additional water storage tanks, 6 and 8 " water mains and 18 new fire hydrants as part of an upgrade to the Piney Woods Water User's Association. Funding was obtained through grants and loans made available for water system improvements. It is anticipated that these improvements will allow the Piney Woods area to be covered in the future under the High Rolls' Public Protection Classification, or ISO, rating of Class 61. This means a potential savings of hundreds of dollars annually in homeowner insurance premiums.

HRVFD has ordered a new Class A pumper truck to be located at the station in Piney Woods to support this new ISO re-classification. The new apparatus is a 4WD, 750-gallon, 1500 GPM pumper apparatus expected to be delivered in late 2009. This type of truck is designed to work in the Wildland Urban Interface, where homes and communities share boundaries with unpopulated, usually forested areas. It meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) requirements for a Class A pumper, and it is needed for the ISO upgrade for HRVFD. The new apparatus will cost about $220,000 and has been made possible in part by a loan from the New Mexico Finance Authority.

CAN WE FIND YOUR HOUSE?
HRVFD is working hard to identify rural address numbers that need to be established and/or replaced. It has been more than 15 years since the rural addressing system came to Otero County and many of the address or route numbers that were installed in the past to help emergency personnel locate your home are now missing. This is critical information, especially in an emergency when time is of the essence. If your home address numbers are in need of replacement please call your local fire department and let them know so they can assist you with getting them replaced.

(ISO) web site, this rating system is needed to help establish appropriate fire insurance premiums for residential and commercial properties and insurance companies who need reliable, up-to-date information about a community's fire-protection services. ISO collects information on municipal fire-protection efforts in communities throughout the United States. In each of those communities, ISO analyzes the relevant data using their Fire Suppression Rating Schedule (FSRS). They then assign a Public Protection Classification from 1 to 10. Class 1 generally represents superior property fire protection, and Class 10 indicates that the area's fire-suppression program doesn't meet ISO's minimum criteria.
